Barber Shops & Beauty Parlors

Wilkins Beauty Shop

Edith Wilkins opened her newest shop in 1938 at 12713 Kinsman Road in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood after operating at three other locations in the Cedar-Central area, the most recent of which had opened the previous year at 4923 Cedar Avenue. The Mt. Pleasant shop remained at this location until 1945, when it moved one block to the east to 12813 Kinsman. A robbery delayed the opening for a short time. The shop operated there until it closed in 1951. The commercial block containing the 12713 address still stands, but the Green Book–listed 12813 address is now a vacant lot. Wilkins was the founder (in 1936) of Wilkins School of Cosmetology. Additional information coming soon.
